Botswana Decriminalizes Homosexuality

Writer: Zintle RamanoZintle Ramano

The Gaborone High Court ruled out this morning that Botswana is now a safe space for queer people whereas the country in its 53 years of democracy from colonialism had made it illegal for homosexuality to exist. Some sections of the penal code made sentencing for up to 7 years imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations. The court, however, ruled these provisions “discriminatory because they take away the only means of sexual expression of the applicant”.
